Provincial Grand Lodge of Warwickshire

Wyley Lodge No 3836 celebrate their Centenary in style

A Centenary meeting was held at St Mary Magdalen Chapel, Guy’s Cliffe, on Saturday 9th June to celebrate Wyley Lodge achieving 100 years of history, having met at a number of venues around Coventry since its Consecration on 4th May 1918. The Lodge was consecrated by RW Bro Colonel William F Wyley just over two weeks after he was installed as Provincial Grand Master . W Bro Bill Stammers, PAGDC, is the current Master for a remarkable sixth time, beginning in 1987. The members of Wyley Lodge were joined by the Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro David Macey with his Provincial Team and numerous visitors from many Lodges which have offered support over the years. The Temple and Festive Board were filled to near capacity with those wishing to see this very special event take place.

The Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro David Macey, together with the Provincial Grand Wardens, opened the Lodge and congratulated the members of Wyley Lodge in reaching this most significant milestone in their history. He also asked those assembled to take a moment to remember the courage and wisdom of the founders of the Lodge back in 1918. Having completed the opening a column was formed to escort the centenary warrant into the Lodge, in the very safe hands of the Provincial Grand Secretary, W Bro Mike Reeve, who then proceeded to read the warrant. Once read, the warrant was presented to the Worshipful Master, W Bro Bill Stammers, who received it with great delight.

The Provincial Grand Chaplain, W Bro John Cowan, delivered a splendid oration on the foundation of the Lodge, looking back to the circumstances in 1918, and the courage of the Founders back in those dark days.

Finally, the Provincial Grand Master presented each member of the Lodge with a Centenary Jewel, and emphasised that they can wear it with great pride in recognition of a splendid achievement. The Worshipful Master then took the chair, and thanked R W Bro David Macey, Provincial Grand Master and his team for their presence on this significant occasion. He then invited W Bro Andris Skudra, PProvJGW, to present a history of Wyley Lodge, which went into fascinating detail, and provided those present with a great insight into the history of the Lodge.

Much to the Provincial Grand Master’s delight, a cheque was presented for £4,500 was presented for the 2023 Festival, being the result of contributions made since the last Festival to the Lodge’s Relief Chest – an ideal means of accumulating funds over a period of time between Festivals.   RW Bro David Macey thanked the Lodge for the very large sum, and congratulated the Lodge on their foresight.

The Worshipful Master and the members of the Lodge were congratulated by the Provincial Grand Master on the success of the evening and wished them well for the future. The most recent and youngest member of the Lodge, Bro Ciaran Carrington-Smith was charged to remember the evening in 50 years time, and to recount the proceedings for the benefit of those present at the next milestone meeting.

Open Day at Guy's Cliffe House - a rare opportunity to tour the house

Guy's Cliffe

Guy's Cliffe
Sunday 27th May
10 am - 2 pm

The brethren who meet at Guy's Cliffe House near Warwick would like to extend an invitiation to any Freemasons and their families who would like to take an opportunity to tour the house and grounds to join us on May 27th between 10 and 2 for an open day. We are also happy to invite people who are interested in learning more about Freemasonry and may be keen to find out about becoming either a male or female Freemason.

Guy's Cliffe House has parts of the building that date back to the 13th century and are a scheduled ancient monument the lodge rooms are apparently the oldest building in which freemasons meet.

The main house is a ruin that looks over the river Avon and its grounds have a Site of Special Scientific Interest as part of them

We are opening the temple, parts of the house and grounds not normally visited by the general public.

We look forward to welcoming everyone to Guys Cliffe

The Happiness Five go up to Llandudno - Presentation of a 60 Year Certificate

On Sunday 29th April 2018, five brethren from the Lodge of Happiness No 7952 ventured up to Llandudno in order to present a 60 Year Certificate to W Bro Thomas F Mitchell, with the approval of the Provincial Grand Master.

W Bro Tom was initiated into the Lodge of Faith and Hope no 4772 on 25th March 1958, and subsequently became one of the 13 Founder Members of the Lodge of Happiness in June 1964.

W Bro Tom, now a Nonagenarian, is one of two surviving Founders and delighted in explaining to the visiting party some of the early history of the Lodge and its members, particularly in relation to the fun and good times of past Ladies Nights, Social events and now seeing the Lodge grow from strength to strength – unfortunately for us, from a little further afield.

The picture below shows W Bro Tom receiving his Certificate from W Bro Geoffrey Weston, IPM of the Lodge, accompanied by W Bros Chris Albion and Mike Willetts (Photographer), Bros Philip Williams and John Snape together with obligatory fizz and Lodge Cupcakes!!

Presentation to W Bro Tom

Now an Honorary Member of Happiness, W Bro Tom keeps in touch with Lodge events through digital communication and the odd phone call here and there. A keen ritualist in his day, being known for his delivery of the Charge to the Initiate and the Traditional History, Tom was delighted to see a full plan of “work” for the Lodge over the next two years – only sorry that he can no longer make the journey down to Birmingham from North Wales.

After a very “Happy” couple of hours of fraternal company, the visiting posse retired to a local restaurant on the seafront in Llandudno for a refreshment stop before the return journey to the Midlands – unfortunately, we didn’t manage to wrestle either Tom or the glorious sunshine away from North Wales – can’t quite understand why!
