Athestan Lodge pipes in the haggis

Athelstan Lodge held their annual Burns Night Supper at the Red Lion Hotel on Saturday 23rd January 2016. Over 90 brethren, wives and friends attended what was, once again, a very successful evening. All were royally entertained with a piper piping in the haggis and W Bro Danny Prentice giving the address to the haggis in his usual inimitable style.

After an excellent meal with wine and, of course, a liberal supply of malt whisky, the Worshipful Master, W Bro David Evans gave the toast to "The Lassies", with his wife Karen giving a suitable reply. The Worshipful Master announced that the charity raffle on the evening had raised a wonderful £570.00. This would be shared equally between our two local hospices, the Mary Ann Evans Hospice and the St Giles Hospice.

To complete the evening the entertainment continued with music and dancing by a Caleigh Band.

Tony gets the Third Degree…..

Bro Tony Hill was delighted to have been raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason at the recent meeting of the Lodge of Integrity No. 4563.  So what, you may ask.  Well, Bro. Tony was initiated into the Dionyos Lodge in the District of Cyprus where he was then based with his work.  Family issues brought him back to the UK, and more specifically Erdington, and back in 2013 he was passed to the Second Degree at Integrity’s October meeting.  Bro Tony is now back in his childhood home of Plymouth but had expressed a desire to come back up to Integrity for his Raising.

The ceremony went very well as Integrity is blessed with a number of excellent ritualists.  The Worshipful Master, W Bro Richard Ayling, was delighted to pass the gavel to the IPM, W Bro Mike Hogarth PProvGSuptWks ProvDepGDC, who performed the ceremony to his usual high standard.  Having restored himself to his personal comforts, Bro Tony enjoyed an exemplary rendition of the Traditional History by W Bro John Emms PSGD PAsstPGM.  The Worshipful Master, not wishing to be left out, concluded the ceremony with an excellent presentation of the working tools.

Bro Tony’s work takes him all over the globe.  He is a saturation diver (deep sea diver to us mere mortals) and typically finds himself working at a depth of 200m for up to a month at a time.  Consequently, he is yet to find a new Masonic home.  The brethren of Integrity would have been delighted to see Bro Tony become a Warwickshire Freemason but appreciate the impracticality that comes with living on the south coast and the distances involved.  Instead, we must content ourselves that Bro Tony is looking to join the Lodge of Integrity No. 4098 meeting in Plymouth!

Bedeworth Lodge celebrates its 500th meeting in style

On 10th February 2016, Bedeword Lodge No: 7274 held its 500th meeting since its consecration in 1953. The Lodge was opened by its honoured guest Assistant Provincial Grand Master W Bro Christopher Rogers who congratulated the Lodge on achieving such a milestone in its history.

The Lodge was also honoured by the presence of several other acting Provincial Officers and cherished visitors who all helped make the evening very special and memorable for all concerned. The Lodges Visiting Officer W Bro Graham Venn presented the Lodge with a certificate on behalf of the Provincial Grand Master RW Bro David Macey, in recognition of submitting its three year plan to the Provincial Office, this being part of a major initiative to promote the growth of Freemasonary in Warwickshire.

A Fast Meeting... And A Fast Haggis...

Orion Lodge No 4993The last meeting of Orion Lodge held on January 26th must have been one of the quickest in history!  The reason for this... the festive board to follow being a full Burns supper!

The normal meeting was well attended by visitors and we managed to complete the business required with appropriate decorum, but in such a fast time.  Even the Worshipful Master commented that he had more to say at this meeting than the Secretary, who normally has so much to report, had shortened all of his reports to be so concise that if you blinked, you missed them!

Following the harmonious meeting, all of the Brethren joined family members, and non-masonic guests for a well-deserved pre-dinner drink where the socialisation of the evening commenced.
The dedicated dining room at the Apollo Hotel had been set up with round tables instead of the normal head table and sprig and it looked magnificent in the candlelight.  This is the first year that we have held the Burns Supper at the hotel, and the staff were curious and keen to observe the initial proceedings.

Our own Provincial Grand Chaplain W. Bro John Cowan, a true Scotsman if ever there was one delivered the Selkirk Grace with his usual aplomb.  Following this, he escorted in the Haggis on his 'Fiddle' and then delivered a dramatic version of the Address to the Haggis, somewhat frightening the chef when the knife was held to his throat! The dinner was less formal than a usual meeting due to the non-masonic attendees, although the appropriate toasts were given.

The best two of these were that to 'The Lassies' by Bro. Ken Wilson who pointed out the reliance that we place on our ladies, and also some of the pitfalls!
The response was given by his Fiancé Ms. Edwina Grant, who more than rebuked Ken for his speech and levelled the playing field for the Ladies.  I do wonder what the conversation was like in their car on the way home...

W.Bro. Roger Miles then demonstrated his vocal chords with a beautiful rendition of  'the Ladies Song' supported or ruined, depending on your viewpoint, by the rest of the male attendees. Bro Steve Shuck undertook the sale of Raffle tickets and also was an excellent MC for the draw.  The prize table was groaning with a selection of prizes, mostly alcoholic or chocolaty in nature.  This raised the magnificent sum of £296 which will go to one if the Provincial Grand Masters 'Famous Five' charities which is the Birmingham Children’s Hospital.

This annual event is becoming more popular, and if we had more people attending this year, we would not have fitted into the dining room.  Our thanks especially go to W. Bro Michael Belcher and his wife Carol for all of the hard work that they put in in organising the event.

Bro. Carl Symonds
Junior Warden
