John's Memory Runs On
Following the passing of W Bro John Smith, of St George's Lodge 3818 in December 2012, his family requested donations in favour of Myton Hospice in lieu of flowers at his funeral. Several hundred pounds were donated to the Hospice by individuals and Lodges, and other orders, of which he was a Member or regular visitor.
Earlier this year two of John's grandsons, Jonathan and Christopher Smith, ran in the Taunton Marathon in Somerset and raised the excellent further sum of £1,000 by sponsorship for the Hospice in memory of John, which they have now handed to Myton. This consisted of £500 from individuals matched by £500 from their employers Western Power.
The photograph shows the boys after the Marathon with an insert of John holding the Olympic torch, taken in his garden in the autumn of 2012.
In addition to this money granddaughter Lear Smith also raised a further £1,000 for the Hospice from her employers, by bidding for one of three annual donations they make to Charity.
Like Father, Like Son(s)
The Lodge of Unity 567 enjoyed a magnificent evening at their November 2013 meeting at a packed Alderson House in Warwick, attended by both Provincial Grand Master RW Bro David Macey and the Provincial Grand Master of Worcestershire RW Bro Robert Vaughan, together with many of the year’s acting Provincial Grand Lodge Officers and a retinue of distinguished guests.
This very special occasion saw the Master of the Lodge W Bro Ian Slesser hand his gavel to his Senior Warden W Bro Peter Manning (who is also the Provincial Senior Grand Warden) thus enabling Peter to initiate his two sons, Benjamin and Oliver.
Following a superb and particularly moving ceremony, the ProvGM presented a splendid explanation of the first degree tracing board, spellbinding not only for Benjamin and Oliver, but also several other Entered Apprentices assembled for the presentation.
As a permanent memento of the evening Peter presented the Lodge with its own Square and Compasses, as well as observing that the Lodge’s Declaration Books would also provide a record of this memorable occasion, his sons having “straddled” both the now full and subsequent new volumes.
