Provincial Grand Lodge of Warwickshire

The Master of Knowle Lodge 8001, W Bro Rod Hinton together with members and guests, saw the presentation of a 50 year Service to Freemasonry Certificate to W Bro Fred Wunderley, Past Provincial Junior Grand Warden, by Assistant Provincial Grand Master W Bro Trevor Sturt who had, coincidentally, installed Fred into the chair of Oaks of Arden Lodge in 1988.

Born in Salford, Lancashire, in 1933 Fred was educated at Salford Grammar School and experienced considerable trauma during the war prior to being conscripted into the Royal Air Force, when in 1952 he was posted to RAF Barnwood, where some 60 airmen and 4,000 civilian girls were based. A young man’s paradise indeed! Following his National Service he pursued a very successful career as an Electrical Engineer, holding senior positions with major British companies prior to starting his own company.

He was initiated into the Duke of York Lodge 2449 in Manchester in 1964, becoming Master in 1973 and following his move to Warwickshire became a Joining Member of Oaks of Arden Lodge in 1980, and then Knowle Lodge in 2012.

Fred married Shirley in 1960 and they have two daughters and three grandchildren. He is a regular churchgoer and keen sportsman, particularly cricket, and has supported Manchester United FC since the age of ten, knowing many of their players who lived nearby during his time there, even having gone tenpin bowling with football legend George Best.

The presentation was followed by a splendid proclamation by Provincial Deputy Grand Director of Ceremonies W Bro Howard Smith, duly acknowledged by W Bro Wunderley.
