Fortior supports local good causes

This year’s Worshipful Master W Bro Jon Creak decided that in his year the Fortior Lodge No 6172 should support local good causes.

The charity collection in November 2016 raised £110 for a Handsworth Scout Group who needed support as they had to vacate their meeting place because the Church was closing.

January 2017 saw £200 raised for Handsworth Girls School to fund book tokens for pupils achieving progress and effort prizes and our March 2017 collection raised £100 for the Birmingham Crisis Centre.

Birchfield Lodge’s Marathon Man

Alzheimer's SocietyW Bro Keith Pibworth, the Immediate Past Master of Birchfield Lodge and a member of the Round Table Lodge in Staffordshire, at an age when he might know better, is preparing to run in the Edinburgh Marathon. His reason is explained below, but his aim is to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society, an illness by which many of us have been closely affected, and which is supported substantially by Freemasonry – the Masonic Charitable Foundation has recently donated £175,000 to Alzheimer’s Research. If you feel able to support Keith’s efforts, please visit his donations page at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Keith-Pibworth.

About the charity

Alzheimer's Society - Charity Registration No. 296645

Alzheimer’s Society is transforming the landscape of dementia forever. Until the day we find a cure, we will create a society where those affected by dementia are supported and accepted, able to live in their community without fear or prejudice.

Keith's Motivation

Keith says, "I am running the Edinburgh marathon on Sunday 28th May 2017 in memory of my Mum who died from Alzheimer's disease on 4th July 2016. She would have been 80 on 30th May 2017 and this is my way of remembering her. You may say that I'm old enough to know better than to put my body through this gruelling event and I probably agree with you but if my (and your) contribution helps people come to terms with this disease quicker than we did, let alone find a cure for it all, the effort will be worth it. My long run is now 21 miles so all is going well."

Athelstan support the local scouts

Athelstan Lodge No 1333 from Atherstone, recently received a request by Warton and Austrey Scout Group for help in raising £500 to enable them to purchase four-man tents, this to enable them to go camping during the Easter holidays. As a Lodge we are committed to try and help Local Charities and Organisations. To this end our Worshipful Master, W Bro Gerard Somers arranged for the whole amount to be donated to them.

To quote the recipients of the cheque,  "This will enable our group to camp over the Easter weekend and whenever we want in the future due to the money being available so quickly, we would have needed over two years of events to raise this money, many thanks".

The Circle has been Squared - ‘Serendipity’ became Real

On Saturday the 11th March 2017 at 10.30am The University of Birmingham Lodge, 5628 and The General Lodge of Instruction, 587 met at Severn Street Rooms and conducted a Double Ceremony of Passing.

The University of Birmingham Lodge graciously allowed The General Lodge of Instruction to open and take the principal offices for the ceremony, which was done with feeling and the competence expected of them. The candidates were treated to confident and assured work which was acknowledged by the non-participants.

The Festive Board lunch was timed to perfection and Severn Street enhanced their reputation for providing excellent dining, which was enjoyed by members and visitors alike judging by the level of conversation. New friends were made and interest in the General Lodge of Instruction was refreshed. The Grace before and after the meal was fascinating for those who ‘have the Latin’, and delivered with natural ease by W Bro Kevin Parkes Past Assistant Grand Registrar, Assistant Provincial Grand Master (Staffordshire).

The General Lodge of Instiruction welcomes enquiries from all Masons, including EA’s and FC’s who would like help to practise, or simply want to join with other like-minded brethren in enjoying their ritual.
