Warwickshire Installed Masters – 30th September 2016

Any meeting of the Warwickshire Installed Masters’ Lodge is special. It is often described as the Premier lodge in the Province and is certainly the largest; and in fact the second largest lodge in our Constitution – a proud boast! The September meeting was somewhat very special. Not only was it the installation meeting but it also saw W Bro Peter Manning invested as our newest Assistant Provincial Grand Master.

The Kings Heath Masonic Centre, just over the border in Worcestershire, once more proved to be an ideal place to hold our meeting with the main temple filled to capacity – indeed it is not every day when you see latecomers entering a lodge room complete with their own chair! It was a delight to be able to welcome RW Bro Robert Vaughan, the Provincial Grand Master for Worcestershire, who was able to see just how well we have been looked after at Kings Heath.

Past Assistant Provincial Grand Master - Phil HallThe meeting was opened as a Provincial Grand Lodge by the Provincial Grand Master and the Provincial Wardens, the Provincial Grand Master started his Provincial business by presenting W Bro Phil Hall with his collarette as a Past Assistant Provincial Grand Master, thanked him for all that he has done for the Province especially with the Universities scheme and congratulated him on his appointment as our Grand Superintendent. W Bro Phil responded with thanks, adding that he was looking forward to his new role.

The ProvGM then formally announced that he had appointed W Bro Peter Philip Manning as an Assistant Provincial Grand Master. Once his patent was confirmed to be in order, a deputation was formed, unsurprisingly from his Mother Lodge - the Lodge of Unity No 567 – to escort him into the meeting. One delightful touch was the inclusion of his two sons, Brothers Ben and Ollie Manning, carrying his chain and patent respectively. W Bro Peter was obligated and invested by the Provincial Grand Master, after which he was superbly proclaimed by the Provincial Grand Director of Ceremonies and then saluted by the assembled throng.

The Worshipful Master was returned to the chair and the Lodge business was commenced with the installation of Assistant Provincial Grand Master, W Bro Trevor Sturt, the Master Elect, into the Chair of King Solomon. In true Warwickshire Installed Masters’ fashion, the ProvGM presented the Master Elect who was then installed as the 92nd Master in a delightful and sensitive manner.

The Worshipful Master then delivered his address and gave a précis of the (nearly) 300 years of Freemasonry in Warwickshire, thanking W Bro Bob Russell for writing the two books which cover the history of the Province of Warwickshire. Once completed, the Provincial Grand Master congratulated the Worshipful Master for his wonderful address, adding that he had made what could have been a boring subject, an enthralling and interesting one.

The newly installed Worshipful Master started his year by giving up alcohol for October in order to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support, we wish W Bro Trevor well, anyone wishing to support him in this challenge can do so here: https://www.gosober.org.uk/users/trevor-sturt

Pictured here are Mrs Dorothy Young and W Bro Alan Perry at the unveiling, it's a first for the Lodge of Equity as it is a completely new honours board, sadly the lodge had never had one until now.

The morning started with the arrival of the Brethren, their partners and Mrs Dorothy Young and her family members.  W Bro Alan Perry welcomed everyone and introduced Mrs Dorothy Young, who gave a lovely speech and then unveiled the new honours board.  This was followed by light refreshments and a tour of the Yenton Assembly Rooms for those that were able.

Talking Heads, the Next Step

Orion LodgeOn Tuesday 18th October 2016, at the second regular meeting of Orion Lodge at the Yenton Assembly Rooms, our new home, E Companion David Evans, the Third Provincial Grand Principal of Warwickshire will give a presentation entitled “Talking Heads, the next Step”.

This is an informative presentation aimed at those brethren who have completed or are about to complete their Third Degree Ceremony and would like to know more about Royal Arch Masonry and the Completion of the Third Degree.

We do hope that you will be able to join us on this occasion especially any Entered Apprentices, Fellow Craft and Master Masons that have not yet made a commitment to Royal Arch Masonry and of course any of you who are already Royal Arch Masons are equally welcome.

As Orion Lodge does not have a Royal Arch Chapter attached we are not trying to recruit prospective candidates for any particular Chapter but we aim to provide brethren with information, no matter which Royal Arch Chapter they might eventually join.

St Peter's Lodge raises £11,000 for local charity

During the past 11 months W Bro Dan Thomas and his fiancée Jenna Slater have been leading the members of St Peter's Lodge No 7334 in raising funds for local Birmingham based charity Autism West Midlands and on Friday 23rd September saw the handover of a whopping cheque for £11,000!

The decision to support this charity came after Jenna saw first-hand how difficult even the simple things in life can be for families and carers of children with Autism. While out with the couple’s own children at a local funfair, Jenna came across a lady who had taken her autistic grandson along for the day. It was clear that the young boy wasn’t coping well with the surroundings of the funfair and that the lady was struggling to get him up off the floor to return to her car. Jenna with two children in tow, could see that people were just walking by and ignoring them. Eventually Jenna managed to find someone willing to help her. Once the boy had calmed down the lady explained the difficulties she had taking part in things most people take for granted, so after researching local charities and seeing how Autism West Midlands could help they decided to support them during W Bro Dan’s year as Master.

W Bro Dan brought the lodge together to raise funds for the charity. On top of donations from the Brethren, they had a range of events and activities; these included two ladies’ nights, one themed to the 1920's where local companies were brought on side donating gifts and prizes to be raffled and auctioned. A lodge team entered the Great Midlands Fun Run and Jenna led the ladies of the lodge in a "Gung Ho!" Muddy Run raising over £2000 alone, there were cakes sales and Bro Bill Daykin (JW) and his twin Charlie celebrated their 65th and donated their birthday money to the cause! And not to forget WBro Dan faced his nemesis after being nominated by Charity Steward Bro Dave Jagger and jumped out of an airplane at 10,000 feet!

W Bro Dan said, "It's been a tremendous year where myself and Jenna have had 100% support from the lodge in raising funds for a brilliant local charity where we know the £11,000 raised will make a huge difference to people with Autism and their families and carers in the West Midlands, I can't thank everyone enough for their help, it just shows what we can achieve when we work together"

Vanessa Bailey, Fund Raising Manager said, "With your amazing support we will be able to continue to support families to gain strength, confidence and further understanding of an autism diagnosis.  Our Family Support Teams provide a range of services to help those with autism and their families. Support in the Home, Sibling Workshops, Dad’s Groups, Advice and Awareness Sessions, Stay and Play Sessions and Youth Groups are just a snapshot of the work that they do throughout Birmingham. From all of Autism West Midlands, and our families that we support, we want to say a big thank you to all who have got involved in the fundraising with St Peter’s Lodge".
